Heartbreaking: Where Poverty Tears Families Apart… Hope Still Remains

Bolivia is marked by deep and persistent poverty. In the remote villages of the Andes, people lack even the most basic necessities. Medical care is virtually nonexistent, schools are understaffed, and families survive on what the harsh land can provide—if anything at all.

But even that has become uncertain. Prolonged droughts, followed by heavy rains and hailstorms, make survival extremely difficult. Food shortages and malnutrition affect the most vulnerable—especially children. For many, there seems to be no hope for a better future.

These villages are hidden high in the mountains and are extremely difficult to reach. Narrow, dangerous roads wind along deep ravines, often partially washed away. These are places where almost no one goes anymore.

What is perhaps most heartbreaking is the loneliness. Young people leave for cities like Sucre or Santa Cruz in search of a future. Parents remain behind, often never hearing again from their children or grandchildren. In several villages, people shared how they had lost multiple children to illness—simply because no medical help was available.

And yet… this is exactly where we can make a difference.

Through Doctors On Mission, we bring medical care to these places. We treat the sick, provide essential medication, and stand alongside people who have often been completely left behind. For many, our presence means more than care—it restores hope, dignity, and the sense that they are not forgotten.

But the need is urgent—and growing.

Due to rising costs and extreme conditions, it is becoming increasingly difficult to continue reaching these remote communities. A second 4×4 jeep is urgently needed to transport our medical teams and supplies safely into these areas. So far, about $27,000 USD has been raised—but we need roughly double that amount. Without this, entire regions risk being left without any medical care again.
